OUR STORY

Capozza Tile and Floor Covering Center is So Much more than a Tile Store.

Capozza Tile and Floor Covering Center is so much more than a tile store.  It is a three generation run family business with deep roots in the community, whose mission is to extend the highest quality of product, service and craftsmanship to all.

After serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, Joseph A. (Buddy) Capozza Jr. started his flooring career with a local tile contractor. After nearly twenty years of installing tile and supervising he, along with his wife Doris, founded Capozza Tile Co., Inc. in 1974. Working out of the basement in their family home, the assets of the company at that time consisted of a borrowed desk, a manual typewriter, and an adding machine. The family station wagon served as the only company vehicle.

.

In 1977, his son Joseph F. Capozza joined the company and along with his father continued to build upon their reputation of offering nothing but the highest quality service for the Commercial and Residential Flooring Industries. In 1982, property on Forest Avenue was purchased and remodeled to accommodate two offices and a small showroom. At about this time, it became clear that in order to grow, the company would need to offer more flooring variety than just tile.  As a result carpet, resilient and wood flooring were added to the company’s product offerings.

As the business continued to grow, it was soon evident the company would need a larger facility. In 1986, the Capozza Tile Co., Inc. moved to its present location at 267 Warren Avenue in Portland. This move enabled the company to further expand and have both a commercial and residential division, with a large showroom, warehouse and a vast line of unique and quality products. In 1988 Jeanne, Joe’s wife, was hired to assist in the office essentials of the Capozza Company. As a full time mother of three Jeanne wanted the opportunity to assist with the family business as well as have plenty of time to focus on the family at home. Mr. Capozza retired after some forty years in the tile industry, leaving the company's management under the direction of his son Joseph.

.

In 2000, a new opportunity arose that Joseph found to be a perfect addition to expand the company further. Old Port Specialty Tile Co., a division of Capozza Tile Co., Inc., was acquired. For seven years it was operated out of the historical E. Swasey & Crockery Building on Commercial St.

In December of 2007 Joseph and the Old Port Team moved a few blocks away to their current location of 59 Middle St., staying in the comfort and familiar hustle and bustle of Portland’s Old Port District.

Today all five members of the Capozza family, from two generations, manage the family business. Joe as President helps guide the next generation and management teams.  Jeanne is Administrative manager for the company as a whole. The founder’s grandson, Joe III is following in his father’s footsteps and is the Vice President and manages the Commercial Division. Katie, the eldest grand-daughter, manages Old Port Specialty Tile and leads the sales and design team.  Katie not only enjoys working with the medium of tile, but has great respect for the relationships she has been able to develop with each and every client. The third sibling, Tia is a Project Manager in the Residential Division of Capozza Tile and Floor Covering Center who is passionate about assisting homeowners by designing and managing all their installation needs.
